Mabon
Occurring between September 21st and 23rd, this holiday is the Autumnal or Fall Equinox and marks a second harvest or Harvest Home.
The name MABON is a newer term, until recent years the term Autumnal Equinox or Fall Equinox was used to describe this season. Many modern witches and Pagans treat the autumn equinox as a second harvest festival.
Mabon celebrates the balance of opposing forces, light/dark, life/death, etc. with the understanding that after this moment of balance, darkness and death will reign for a time, until Ostara or the spring equinox.
It is also a time of Thanksgiving when we gather and store this year’s harvest, give thanks for help from Gods, ancestors, and living helpers and celebrate the hard work from the harvests that have been done so far in the year and honoring the spirits of the earth such as the Green Man, the God of the Forest, by offering libations to trees. Offerings of ciders, wines, herbs and fertilizer are appropriate at this time.
Wiccans celebrate the aging Goddess as she passes from Mother to Crone, and her consort the God as he prepares for death and re-birth.
