Join us as we honor the beloved dead with a dinner observed in solemn silence.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Jackson and the Phoenix of the Grove chapter of CUUPS invite you to a banquet of delicious cuisine where the only sound heard is music chosen in memory of the departed. Bring photos and mementos to summon the souls of your loved ones on the other side as you partake in an evening of remembrance. This is a tradition where the Beloved Dead are invited to attend with the living for a magical night of communion!

Prior to the event (2:00pm) the building will be open for participants to place their photos and mementos on the ancestral altar.

Each participant will have a 12”x12” area to set up as their shrine to their Beloved Dead. As Unitarian Universalists, we will honor our Beloved Dead that are human and our non-human companions that have crossed over. One space in our collective shrine will be designated to honor those that died alone and unknown.

The evening will open with a brief introduction and blessing where attendees will be guided through the veil between the worlds to the realms of the dead where no one living may speak. they are then seated, and the feast is served. After the meal we will spend time discussing our experiences and sharing stories about our Beloved Dead.

This is a solemn event where respect for the dead is crucial. By remaining slient, you open your heart and mind to those who have crossed over.

Menu for the Evening

In keeping with tradition, the courses of The Dumb Supper are served backwards as a means of weaving participants into the shadowy world of spirit.

Dessert: Spice cake with Caramel Icing (see our perfect potluck https://www.PerfectPotluck.com/KJDD5507)

Drink: Water, Freshly Brewed Coffee or Tea (sweetened and unsweet)

Entree: Please see our perfect potluck event

Salad: Mary’s Salad featuring Goat Cheese, Candied Walnuts, Dried Cherries, and Balsalmic Vinaigrette

Food has been offered to the dead throughout history, from prehistoric man through to the Celts, Egyptians, Romans, Japanese, Chinese, and even in the Catholic church. Dining with the dead is an ancient tradition that honors our divine ancestors regardless of culture or creed. We invite you to take part in this most sacred event.

About the Event

This is among the most sacred events that many of us partake and we take it very seriously. Before you register, you must agree to abide by the expectations of the evening posted below.

Event Begins At 6:30 Sharp. Latecomers Will Not Be Admitted

This event is about honoring the dead and inviting them to visit us in spirit form. To arrive late once the ritual of blessing has already commenced is to disrespect both the dead and the living who have come to connect with them. If you do not arrive on time, you will not be admitted so please plan accordingly.

Expectations for the Evening:

  • No one may speak during the dinner. This event is silent. This silence not only allows people to grieve their dead but creates a space of reverence for the spirits to come through. Those who speak within the dining area will be silently ushered to leave.
  • Cell Phones Must Be SILENCED during the dinner.
  • There shall be no phones in use in the room inside the veiled spaces during the meal. Those texting or using their cell phones will be silently ushered to leave.
  • No Photography during the dinner. We will have a few moments after to take photos if desired.

Special requirements such as vegetarian or allergies, please email us at uucj@outlook.com. We can only accommodate these needs if we know in advance as this is a silent event.
