Beltane 2026

Beltane may pole

Occurring on May 1st, Beltane is a fire ceremony held to signify the midpoint between Spring and Summer. Beltane was historically an Irish celebration/festival that later spread throughout the British isles. Likely the name comes from the Irish word bel, meaning “bright” or fortunate and the Gaelic word “teine,” which means fire. Beltane is a celebration of life and fertility, in which fire/smoke is used for protection. For example, farmers would pass their livestock through the smoke of large bonfires to protect them from evil.

Common Beltane traditions are largely derived from the English May Day celebrations involving fun, frivolity, and games to celebrate the start of summer. Blooming flowers are used as seasonal decorations and rituals include maypoles, dancing, and bonfires.

This Sunday we will honor the turning of the Wheel of the Yearcelebrating the first signs of the coming summer, and introduce our monthly theme of Awakening Curiosity.
