According to the Marijuana Policy Project, Mississippi is one of the 23 states that have decriminalized personal use marijuana possession; however, data indicates that Mississippi’s marijuana laws are not being evenly enforced. A 2013 study by the American Civil Liberties Union found that although blacks and whites use marijuana at nearly identical rates, blacks in Mississippi are 3.9 times more likely than whites to be arrested for marijuana possession.
Last year, Mississippians for Compassionate Care filed a ballot initiative to make medical marijuana legal in Mississippi. The group is aiming to bring an amendment to the state constitution to voters in 2020. You can read the proposed amendment here.
