9:30 a.m. — Adult RE: What We Choose: Ethics for Unitarian Universalists – Session 3: The Common Good

This is the third of a ten-session intermediary course designed for UUs seeking to follow a faith of deeds, not creeds, by focusing on the moral and ethical questions that arise in life and explore ethical frameworks to help sort through a dilemma. In this session, we will examine the ideas of John Stuart Mill and Utilitarian ethics which focuses not on unchanging moral truths but instead on the outcomes of our ethical decisions to guide actions.

11:00 a.m. – Service: When We Come to the Great Divide – led by Jim Becker

Hot, cold; wet, dry; non-gay, gay; man, woman; child, adult: opposites with many variances between. However, what about the “Great Divide”–life and death? We are either one or the other with little left in between. We might ask what if there is a middle within this great divide? Religion, spirituality, and all groups hither and yon have an answer for what the great divide looks like, feels like, IS. However, who really knows? Mortals love the spectacular and tend towards the best story or tale over simple truths.

On Sunday evening, October 11, I was facing the abyss: septic shock—one by one, organs shutting down. I became unresponsive. What did I see, what did I experience, did I actually die? I will talk about my experience and add a perspective on facing the great divide.

11:00 a.m. – Religious Exploration:

  • Chalice Children (ages 3-6): Love Surrounds Us – Session 4: Forgiveness – Focusing on our second principle of being kind and fair to others, we will explore the need to forgive and to be forgiven by others.
  • U.U. Kids (ages 7-12): UU Roots: Michael Servetus – Through a story about a 16th century challenger to the notion of the trinity, the UU Kids will explore the heretical tradition and create their own flaming chalice designs on T-shirts using fabric markers.
  • YUUth (ages 13-17): Cosmos – Episode 13: Unafraid of the Dark – This final episode of the Cosmos series explores the mysteries of dark energy and dark matter and analyzes how governments differ based on the proportion of revenue they devote to education and research.
