The Punk Rock Nature of Vulnerability

I know what you’re thinking: “Justin’s going to talk about Punk Rock, and I don’t like Punk Rock!” Don’t worry; I’m not. But I will say this, Punk Rock and the Punk movement is about being counter-cultural. It’s about NOT fitting in. As I research this sermon on the monthly theme of cultivating relationships, I thought of vulnerability. I came across a song by the band Against Me called Because of the Shame, where the lead singer, Laura Jane Grace, sings, “Because of the shame I associate with vulnerability I am numbing myself completely.” Our culture may like to talk about vulnerability, but we aren’t good at practicing it, thusly, vulnerability is very Punk Rock, whether I talk about Punk Rock or not. So, this Sunday I may mention Punk Rock, but I am preaching on vulnerability.
