A Newsletter for our Members and Friends

March 2007 - Web Edition

Love is the spirit of this church, and service is our law.

To dwell together in peace, to seek the truth in love, and to help one another.

This is our covenant

WORSHIP SCHEDULE

Every Sunday Forum at 9:30am, Service at 11:00am

March 4

Forum:  WalMart: The High Cost of Low Prices, facilitated by Brian Heffner. We will screen this insightful and provocative documentary DVD to heighten awareness of the impact of the “high cost of low prices.”  Come early, the feature runs 57 minutes.

Service: End of Life Care, Susan Knipe.  Susan Knipe thinks out loud about death and the existence of the dying.

March 11

Forum:  COM and LOA!! What's It All About? The Committee on Ministry (COM), which is tasked with the negotiation of a Letter of Agreement (LOA) with the minister, will be available for discussion of the document.  This is your opportunity to ask questions and make suggestions as the COM members prepare for the upcoming church year.  COM members JoAnn Bienvenu, Ray Shenefelt, and Steve Bollinger will conduct.  Rev. Luck will be available to answer questions.

Service:  When the Honeymoon is Over, Reverend Jacqueline Luck.  This sermon will be on lasting relationships and their purposes. I plan to interview some that have been intimate partners for a good number of years, as well as “interview” some writers on the subject.  Potluck lunch will follow.

March 18

Forum:  Encore--COM and LOA!! What's It All About?  An encore of last week's forum for those who were unable to attend.  This is your chance to ask questions and make suggestions.

Service:  Small Wonders, Reverend Jacqueline Luck.  I’ve been reading Barbara Kingsolver’s book of essays entitled, Small Wonders. I think there is much to say about the small wonders in life and their value in illuminating life’s truths.

March 25

Forum:  Infant Feeding as Social Justice, Elise Morse-Gagney.

Service:  Being Religiously Liberal, Reverend Jacqueline Luck.  One of the sad things about the word liberal is that it has become co-opted to mean a particular political stance, which is often an extreme stance, but what does it mean to be religiously liberal? How does one live a liberal faith?

Deadline for submissions to the April UUCJ NUUSletter: March 18.  Please make submissions to Susan Voisin at NUUSletter@uujackson.org.

If you would like to receive the NUUsletter by email, please user our NUUS subscription form.

Mississippi Musings

Stan Davis suggests the concept of holographic organization in his book, Future Perfect.  His idea originates with a unique property of holograms: any fragment of the hologram can regenerate the entire image. A business man, he asks:  Can it also be said with equal possibility that the entire corporation resides in each of its products, and in each of its services?

I thought of congregations as I read his words. I found myself reflecting on each person in a congregation reflecting the whole as shards of a hologram would reflect the whole. In some U.U. literature that whole is referred to as the burning coal around which the congregation gathers. It’s an exciting thought—each member of a congregation reflecting the congregation’s burning coal as a piece of a hologram would.

Davis writes: Useful mission statements give purpose to what team members presently do, as well as what they will be doing in the future.... Vision answers the question, ‘Where are we going?’  Mission supplies the motivation, answering the question, ‘Why are we going there?’

I wonder:  Why do we do what we do? What is our burning coal?

In the forum I lead last month, the group worked on creating a new mission statement for this Unitarian Universalist church in Jackson, MS. Their efforts are below. My hope is that you too will begin composing and get your efforts to me as we all contemplate together UUCJ’s burning coal, its reason for being, why we do what we do?  Here are the first efforts:

A church of progressive faith, we

Embrace diversity, give voice to religious tolerance

And bring hope and freedom to the greater community.

As a beacon illuminates, so does our inclusive community

Strive to illuminate the individual journey toward spiritual enlightenment.

Our members unite to work for repair.

Our diversity invigorates our approach

Our faith backgrounds nourish respect

Our two rings represent joined resources

Our chalice combines two archetypesa drinking vessel and a flame

and as a religious symbol has different meanings to different beholders.

Your presence is welcome!

Consensus through individual and collectively inclusive spiritual interaction....

(Our congregation is) a community of diverse individuals living and sharing these common principles: respect for the inherent worth and dignity of all people; justice, equity and compassion; spiritual growth and a free and responsible search for truth; world community with peace, liberty and justice for all; respect for the interdependent web of all existence.

We attempt to be a beacon of progressive religion in our community, a church which by its actions lives its principles.

I plan to make the anonymous efforts visible for your contemplation and your vote.

The President’s Corner

By Waverly Liles

A sincere thank you to everyone who helped with the pledge campaign, to all who helped with dinners, to all who pledged, and especially to Stacy Callender who managed the process.  At the time this is written, we do not have the results, but I am optimistic.

It is important that everyone remember the Annual Meeting scheduled for the fourth Sunday of March, the 25th.   We have to do some important business, so be there!

One thing we must do is elect officers, one of which is my replacement.   I have been proud to represent this congregation as president, but it is time for a younger person who lives closer to church to take over.  Thanks to all who have been so wonderfully kind and so helpful, and so patient with my stumbles and mistakes.  The board has been wonderful.   I will continue to help as I am able.

Congregational Meeting

Please make plans to attend the Annual Meeting called for March 25th.   We will vote on new officers, vote whether or not to keep Reverend Luck for another year, and do whatever business is brought to the congregation by the membership.

It is imperative that we have a quorum so that we can do the business that needs to be done.  Please plan to be there.

ROOTS Class is Back

The spring Roots Class for those new to Unitarian Universalism or those interested in learning about our faith tradition will begin in March. We will meet after the pot luck March 11th, and again on the 18th. The last two classes will be April 1st and the 29th. Contact Jacqueline for more information.

Our First Choir Rehearsal!

Maureen McGuire will lead our first choir rehearsal on Sunday, March 18th at 12:15 after service. Anyone interested is encouraged to come and share their musical talents—or at least have fun! Pack a lunch or join a group for lunch afterwards. Call the church for information.

First Friday Fun Nights

Come to our gathering for fun and games for people of all ages! Bring any snacks or games you would like to share. All are welcome to attend  on March 2nd from 6:00-8:00 pm at UUCJ. We usually have a great social time—laughing, talking, and playing games! Call the church for info.

Snacks and drinks are welcomed!

Sharing an Abundant Table

We would like to offer our hearty thanks to the people who opened their homes to host the Sharing an Abundant Table Campaign!

Please give your special thanks when you see them to:

·        Rebecca & David Burr

·        Natalie Maynor

·        Dary & Ray Shenefelt

·        Patricia Ice & Bill Chandler

·        Trina & Jim Cameron

We would also like to thank all of you who attended these dinners! Your insightful comments and commitment made for some very special evenings!

We can never express enough our overwhelming gratitude for those you who made financial and time commitments to UUCJ for the 2007-2008 year, especially those of you who make great sacrifices to do so! If it were not for you, we—quite literally—would not be here. Thank you for your contributions to the legacy of UUCJ!

If you have not yet shared your reflections on UUCJ or our 5-year goals or returned your financial commitment card, please turn it in ASAP! Ray Shenefelt needs the information to complete the new budget as part of his role as Board Treasurer. Please give the information to Stacy Callender at your earliest convenience

Fourth Friday Films

Come watch award-winning and thought-provoking films with discussions to follow! Join us March 23rd at the home of Jassen & Stacy Callender, The film starts at 7:00 pm. Call the church for further information or directions.

This month’s feature will be Genesis (2004) by Claude Nuridsanay & Marie Perennou [81 min]. From the creators of Microcosmos, see ingenious footage combined with a wise African narrator, an eclectic score, and all creatures great and small to create a special film that captivates kids and adults alike!
