Unitarian Universalist Church of Jackson

NUUSLETTER

A Newsletter for our Members and Friends

February 2007 - Web Edition

Love is the spirit of this church, and service is our law.

To dwell together in peace, to seek the truth in love, and to help one another.

This is our covenant

WORSHIP SCHEDULE

Every Sunday Forum at 9:30am, Service at 11:00am

February 4

Forum:  AA and the 12-Step Programs.  This forum promises to offer insight into the various ways the inspired AA program has been of service to an ever-broadening number of people.  Come learn more of the impact of this most humble program to recover from suffering.   Facilitated by Brian Heffner.

Service:   Unitarian Presidents Day, The Reverend Jacqueline Luck.  One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents.  I thought it would be fun to look into the Unitarian Presidents this President’s Day.

February 11

Forum:  Can We Talk?  This is a forum in a series on church development in which the minister and the congregation have an opportunity to talk about where you'd like UUCJ to be headed and how to get there.

Service:  Happy Birthday, Charles Darwin, The Reverend Jacqueline Luck.  Each year near Darwin’s birthday I lift up in a sermon the use of reason in our UU faith tradition and religious practices. We Unitarians and Universalists are known for our independent thinking, and all of this brouhaha about Creationism literally just doesn’t make sense!

Potluck lunch will follow services.

February 18

Forum:  Unequal Access to Marriage.  Several gay and lesbian couples with talk with us.  In a panel-discussion format, we'll become more insight-filled.    Facilitated by Brian Heffner

Service:  The Man Called St. Valentine.  There is a poignant and moving relevance in the historic man and the mythologized persona we have come to know as St. Valentine.  Brian Heffner will offer reflection on the actual citizen 'Valentin' and the prosaic icon he has become.  Brent Cox of the ACLU will speak to us of “Liberty” and “Access.”

February 25

Forum:  Faith and Reason.  Interviewed by Bill Moyers, Pima Chodrin, a Buddhist nun, gives voice to her faith which offers a path toward the relief of pain and suffering in the world.  This DVD will start promptly at 9:30am; please be early so as not to miss out.

Service:  Living a Legacy, Stacy Callender.  This service will be a reflection on the past, present, and future of Unitarian Universalism and our UU Congregation in Jackson. Congregational meeting will follow.

Deadline for submissions to the March UUCJ NUUSletter: February 18.  Please make submissions to Susan Voisin at NUUSletter@uujackson.org.

If you would like to receive the NUUsletter by email, please user our NUUS subscription form.

Mississippi Musings

“Without a Vision the Congregation Will Perish”

I am very impressed with all that has been accomplished at UUCJ in 2006!

1) The exquisite paved parking lot.

2) The lighting of UUCJ’s front sign and of the newly paved parking lot.

3) The resounding response to the “almost” capital campaign for the property next door creating a “Building for the Future” fund, which continues to grow with your donations.

4) The weathering of the onslaught from July’s hate mongers following Legislative attempts to restrict reproductive freedom in MS.

5) The well-attended congregational workshop on ministerial and congregational relationships and expectations leading to the creating of a long over-due covenant between me and thee.

6) The many new and excited faces at services and corresponding new membership (all of whom have pledged when joining, some in-kind).

7) The congregational donation of $1,000 dollars to participate in building the Hospice Interfaith Peace House (we’ll have another opportunity this year also).

8) The increase in numbers of UUCJ members attending workshops and district events in order to expand the congregation’s horizons.

9) UUCJ has and is hosting events for the MS cluster and Mid-South district.

10) UUCJ has provided shelter to support those going to work on the MS coast.

11) UUCJ agreed to house NOW’s peaceful resistance trainings; and

12) There is an over-all sense of well-being in the congregation that is great!

Joyously though, there is little time to rest on laurels for those passionately seeking the greater good of their congregation while desiring to insure and further its mission in Jackson, Mississippi! See “Ringing In the New” elsewhere in the NUUSletter

The President’s Corner

By Waverly Liles

There are some important times ahead for our “Little Church in the Wildwood.”   The pledge campaign is upon us.   Stacy has agreed to direct this effort.   We hope to have it finished by March 5th.   It is easy to see that this campaign is important, as all of them have always been.  You will hear more about this soon.   Get ready to help, to participate, to enjoy!

The next thing is that there will be an annual meeting of the congregation on March 25th.   This is where we will elect all officers to replace those whose terms expire this year.  Think about what you want from the meeting, where you want to be, want the church to be a year from now and five years and ten years from now.   Let me know how you feel about all of this.  Tell me what needs to be on the agenda.  This is the congregation’s meeting.  I can help.

Ringing in the New….February 2007…

“Warning, this column may be hazardous to your health, you may feel your blood pressure rising, your face may flush; your heart may pound rapidly in your chest! Brothers and sisters, you may even shout, ‘What is that woman up to now?”

The answer, my friends, is that a new year has begun, and I find myself thinking of possibilities for ringing in the new, shaking things up a bit to create an environment conducive to creative, positive and effective change. I invite you to vision with me; maybe create your own list:

1)     Imagine that growing or building for the future was a vibrant part of the identity, purpose, and mission of each member of the church. “Wow!”

2)     Imagine what it would be like if every member contributed to the financial health of the congregation. “Investing in their values!”

3)     Imagine the congregation seriously beginning to consider options for enlarging the sanctuary space. “Welcoming!”

4)     Imagine asking each member of the congregation to make a “contribution of record” to reflect their commitment to the congregation’s well-being before becoming a “voting member.”  “Healthy congregation!”

5)     Imagine giving away the offering plate monies once a month for social justice ministry. “But we barely make our budget!”

6)     Imagine the work of the church being done by diverse committees meeting every month. “Growing the church responsibly AND congregation building!”

7)     Imagine expanding the use of the RE building…the Newman building. Sanctuary chairs could remain in place reducing Sunday morning chaos. The Forum, etc. could meet in the Newman Building.  “But the Forum meets in the sanctuary!”

8)     Imagine thanking those who give so much to this congregation, especially those who give much financially.  “No, no, no!”

9)     Imagine “Not doing alone what two or more can do together!” an ingredient in congregation building.  “I hate to ask for help when I can do it!”

10)    Imagine newly plastered and painted bathrooms with at least one of them wheel chair accessible!  “No more retro gold and funky room divider?”

11)    Imagine the great many driving by UUCJ each day noticing the church and knowing where it is. “Across from Putnam’s garage” works for giving directions.”

12)    What about sprucing up the outside of the building to go with the new parking lot? “It looks okay to me, a few shingles missing, some green…”

13)    Imagine the front entrance to the church permanently wheelchair accessible. “We have that ramp for those who send someone in to get it, if they know about it!”

14)    Imagine a generous budget with more for speakers and pulpit supply, and undesignated funds for “extras” “But we barely make our budget as is!”

15)   Imagine the two church buildings connected with a traffic flow space uniting UUCJ’s children with the rest of the congregation. “Maybe next year….if ever!”

16)   Imagine solutions to the inevitable parking problems of the future….maybe arrangements could be made with neighboring businesses now. “Futuristic.”

WHAT DO YOU SAY; SHALL WE RING IN SOME NEW?     JL

WE WANT YOUR INPUT!

One of the responsibilities which the congregation has given the Committee on Ministry is to annually evaluate the ministry of UUCJ.  Likewise, your Board of Trustees also completes an evaluation of the ministry. Thus, we need your input.

The ministry encompasses all that we do in our congregation. It includes those responsibilities which traditionally lie with our minister, but it also includes the members' role in ministering to our mission and vision, to each other, and to our larger community.

Need a little help? These are some of the areas we want to evaluate. What do we do well and what are some areas for improvement?

Pastoral Care--such things as ministering to each other; knowing each other's needs; how does our minister function in this area? What else should we all be doing?

Practical Arts--administration; organization; fundraising; canvassing; delegation of authority; support and leadership development; following through on the work of the congregation; recognition of members.

Congregational/Organizational Ministry--welcoming visitors, new members; integration of new members; attention to building a church community; involvement of others; nurturing of lay leadership.

Personal/Professional Growth--does our minister expand her knowledge and expertise? Do we as members do the same? Do we provide feedback to our professional leaders and lay leaders? Is it constructive--a critique rather than criticism?

Teaching--how well do we do in all aspects of teaching? Children's RE; Adult RE; forum topics; does our minister encourage and facilitate? Do we assist her in this?

Worship--do we have a well thought out worship schedule? Do we adequately prepare? Does the minister guide lay leaders in worship? Do the messages reflect intellectual challenge, creativity, and provide inspiration. Do we effectively use music, readings, ritual to create a space for worship?

Denominational Activities--do we take part in the District and UUA sponsored activities? Does our minister bring to us information and inspiration from the greater UU Community? Do our lay leaders?

Prophetic Outreach--social issues; social action; advocating for community

We will be looking at finalizing our evaluations by March. If you would like to provide input, please write your comments down and give them to one of the Committee on Ministry members (JoAnn Bienvenu, Ray Shenefelt, or Steve Bollinger) or one of the Board of Trustees. Remember to let us know what our minister and our ministry (us) are doing right as well as areas for improvement you may see.

Congregational Meeting

The annual congregational meeting will take place on March 25th after service.   The business to be done includes electing officers, deciding about having a minister for another year, and others as needed and pointed out by the congregation.

A THANK YOU!

I would like to personally thank all stewards of this Beloved Community in the year 2006. I am aware that all of our situations differ and that some giving is not documented, so I want to thank each of you who contributed financially as well as otherwise to this congregation.

I believe that you will want to thank these stewards of UUCJ for their contributions to the church’s general fund and/or to its building for the future fund. They have contributed to the health and well-being of this congregation and its future at amounts from slightly less than 1000 dollars to 29,000 dollars in 2006:

JoAnn Bienvenu

Mary Margaret & Steve Bollinger

Trina & Jim Cameron

Mary & Joe Clayton

Gwen & Perry Combs

Mary & Bill Gressett

Patricia Ice & Bill Chandler

Jack Hammond

Barbara Lewis

Waverly Liles

Stacy Callender has agreed to direct the pledge campaign for this year.   It will take place during the month of February.   More details to come.

Signs of Our Progress in 2006

Building Fund went from $0 in January 2006 to $13,010 in December 2006!

We supported full-time ministry for the first time in decades because people increased their pledges!

Our minister helped us toward our goals of being more visible and doing more for our community!

We have new outside lighting, a lighted sign, and a paved parking lot!

Sharing Our U.U. Perspectives (S.O.U.U.P.)

The first and third Wednesday evenings (Feb. 7 and 21), join us in the Newman Building (RE) at six for soup and study/discussion. The first book we will focus on is Being Liberal in an Illiberal Age by Jack Mendelsohn. If you want a book and have not told me, let me know. I have a few. I plan to intersperse DVD’s in the curriculum every so often, but all will be on Unitarian and Universalist identity.

Fourth Friday Films

Each month brings a different award winning, independent film with thought-provoking topics! Join us Feb 23rd at the home of Jassen & Stacy Callender beginning at 7:00 pm. Call the church for further information or directions.

This month’s feature will be Power Trip (2004) by Paul Devlin [85 minutes]. This documentary gives us a humorous, heartbreaking look at the culture clash between corporate power suppliers and citizens as they feel their way through post-Soviet Georgia, where corruption, civil war, and chaos are everyday occurrences—but electricity might not be!

Popcorn and coffee/tea provided. Additional snacks welcomed but not required.

First Friday Family Nights

Come join friends and families Feb 2nd for a great social time—laughing, talking, and playing games! We will meet again this month at Ranjan & Maureen's home for family-friendly fun from 6:00-8:00 pm. Call the church for directions.

Snacks and drinks are welcomed!

Sharing an Abundant Table

This February several families will be hosting Abundance Suppers where we can join in fellowship to discuss our visions for the next five years and commit to making it happen! Be sure to check the sign up sheets to come to the table and commit to making UUCJ more abundant for all!

If you would like to host a dinner, or just sign up for one, please contact Stacy Callender.
